cataract SURGERY

Your eye, like a camera, has a lens that focuses light. Your lens is made mostly of water and proteins. As a cataract forms, the proteins naturally start to break down, causing the lens to become cloudy and yellowed. Aging is the most common cause of cataracts. However, certain medical conditions and medications, injuries and previous eye surgeries can also cause cataracts.

The

Surgery

In 99% of cases the surgery will be performed with ultrasound energy commonly called phacoemulsification of the cataract .

The surgery usually takes between 10-15 min depending on the type of cataract.

An IOL(intra ocular lens) will be placed at the end of the procedure (the type of the IOL and the Brand will be discussed before the surgery at your preop evaluation ).

In most cases the procedure is sutureless (SELF SEALING INCISION).

PREMIUM IOL VERSUS

STANDARD IOL

After removing the cataract ,we have the choice of putting a standard IOL (MAKING YOU SEE ONLY DISTANCE VISION) OR other types of lenses called premium lenses (FOR DISTANCE/INTERMEDIATE AND NEAR VISION ).

The type of IOL will be discussed before surgery .

What are the advantages of Laser Cataract surgery ?

Laser incision has been found to seal better than an incision made with a blade, which results in better healing.

In laser cataract surgery, less energy goes into the phacoemulsification process than with traditional cataract surgery. This decrease in ultrasound energy may reduce inflammation and swelling of the front part of the eye (cornea) that can affect vision.

Laser cataract

surgery

In this technique,3 steps of the surgery are done not manually but with the help of a laser called femtosecond laser. Those 3 steps include: Incision, cataract fragmentation, and capsulotomy .

BEFORE YOUR

surgery

About a week before your surgery, we will do some tests to measure the size and shape of your eye. These tests help your eye doctor choose the right kind of artificial lens (called an intraocular lens, or IOL).

Use special eye drops. Your eye doctor may prescribe these eye drops to help protect your eye from getting an infection.

Stop taking some medications. Tell your eye doctor about any medications you take. If you take a medication that could cause bleeding during your surgery, your eye doctor may ask you to stop taking it for a little while.

Don’t eat or drink the night before. Your eye doctor may tell you to stop eating and drinking several hours before your surgery. Don’t eat or drink the night before. Your eye doctor may tell you to stop eating and drinking several hours before your surgery.

Clean your eyelids and eye lashes. Your eye doctor may have you clean your eyelids and eyelashes with baby shampoo the night before and the morning of your surgery to get rid of any germs that could cause an infection.

Post operative

instructions

Cataract surgery only takes 10 to 15 minutes, but you could be at the facility for a few hours. The extra time is used for preparation, post-surgery evaluation and recovery instructions.

You’ll need to have someone drive you home after your procedure. You’ll also need to wear your eye shield any time you sleep for the first several days. Some people need to wear it for longer.

Cataract treatment can make your eyes more sensitive to light while they recover. It’s important to wear dark sunglasses outside after surgery. Some facilities will give you special glasses to take home.

You will use prescribed medicated eye drops to help your eye heal.
